Organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV - İstanbul Kültür Sanat Vakfı), the Istanbul Film Festival celebrated its 31st anniversary this year. The festival’s prestigious Golden Tulip Awards crowned the winners in different categories with Emin Alper’s first feature film Beyond the Hill (Tepenin Ardı) receiving the best national film award. Earlier this year, the movie won the special mention award at the 62nd Berlinale (Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin) and is also to be screened at the Tribeca Film Festival (April 18-29) later this month.

The movie tells the story of a family united for a summer holiday. The family’s feud with the unseen nomads, who gaze their goats on the main character, Faik’s property unlawfully, serves as an action setting through which the psychological depth and complexity of each character are revealed. The dominant use of landscapes and wilderness amplifies this strong psychological dimension of the movie. It has also led some movie critics to crown movie’s director Emin Alper as an heir to Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Turkey’s internationally-acclaimed director, who is known for his long splendid takes in natural ambience.
Tribeca’s associate programmer Ashley Havey praises Alper’s feature debut noting the following: “Masterfully evoking tension through isolation, landscape, and unspoken conflict, Alper conveys that what lies beyond the hill may be far less damaging than what is within your walls.”
