About Us

Zawiya, the Cultural Map of the Middle East, is the arts and culture blog of the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies at Tel Aviv University. Through our coverage of art, literature, music, film, and style, we provide analysis of contemporary Middle Eastern cultures and trends.

Zawiya is the Arabic word for angle. There are similar words in all the major languages of the Middle East, namely Hebrew (zavit), Turkish (zaviye) and Persian (zavieh). The choice of the blog’s title reflects the project’s underlying purpose: to emphasize the cultural and artistic dimensions of the Middle East, which are often tossed aside in the domineering world of geopolitics.
